CELESTE & JESSE 4EVER
The film Celeste and Jesse Forever has some blatant and interesting differences to the script as well as some smaller dialogue changes. Changes are seen from the very beginning of the film, and vary from action to dialogue and even song choices. It was very interesting to see the major modifications made to the introduction and dialogue throughout the film, since the co writers were also executive producers. In this case it proves again that the script is not the final word, whether it is due to monetary gain or later improvisational improvements, changes will happen.
The very first and major difference is seen in the opening montage. On film all we see is adult Jesse and Celeste falling in love and getting married then a little bit of a fight. In the script it is much more detailed showing the friendship growing from you teenagers and through the years until they are together and fall in love with each other and then more of a distance than is shown in the films montage. The script sets up the premise of the film much better than the one that was used in the film, the films version does not show how long their friendship has been making it feel like less of a deep rooted relationship.
If the script montage had been followed it would have been longer but more detail would have made it more understandable that the friendship would last after a divorce. The film version of a montage is easy to see that time was considered and much of the written montage was cut out. The song for the montage is very specific in the script but not used in the film, this could be for many reasons, such as not having the rights or for money making purposes to choose a more current song by a better know artist.
It is interesting that so many changes are made from the very beginning since the co creators of the script worked on making the film as well, in this case it would be easy to believe that such changes would not be made but money is probably a large deciding factor. From the very different set up in action to the very interesting changes in dialogue, there continues to be differences from film to script. While the same overall structure of the dialogue is present there are specific differences. References are made to major landmarks in the film that are not seen on the script. It is clear that as the location of the film was found, the script dialogue was altered to incorporate the new setting.
It is also clear that while filming the actors came up with some adlibbing off of the original dialogue and more shocking humor was kept instead of the more bland written words. Again this is interesting because reading the script with very specific dialogue and references, it would be assumed the writers turned executive producers would stay true to those purposeful words. In the end they found that altering those words would be more beneficial to the film’s success. The co writers prove that while they wrote the script very specifically and purposefully, in the end it is about what works and not about staying true to every word, but staying true to the overall structure and message of the story.
